Educational Workshops

1.  RE-AIM
8:30 -11:30 am

Paul Estabrooks, PhD
Human Nutrition, Foods, & Exercise
Virginia Tech
Blacksburg, VA, USA

When considering the potential of a given physical activity or nutrition intervention to improve health and reduce health disparities there is a need to gather evidence that is context-relevant, practical, and robust. The RE-AIM framework (Reach, Efficacy/Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation, Maintenance) was developed to provide indicators of the potential public health impact of interventions tested within efficacy, effectiveness, or demonstration project research designs. Specifically, the framework highlights the need to expand metrics to include, but go beyond, simple assessments of efficacy and effectiveness. This expansion includes assessment of factors such as the representativeness of study participants and settings, the robustness of intervention effects, the potential or actual rate of adoption among delivery settings, and the sustainability of behavior change at the individual level and sustainability at the intervention implementation level. The objective of this seminar is to provide a brief overview of the RE-AIM framework as it applies to nutrition and physical activity programs, policies, or environmental changes. The seminar will include 3 segments: (1) a RE-AIM Overview, (2) methods to assess RE-AIM indicators, and (3) determining the individual and setting level impacts of different intervention strategies. All components will include interactive activities to support learning objectives. Participants in the seminar are encouraged to bring data on a program, policy, or environmental intervention that they have developed or read about.

At the completion of the seminar participants will be able to;

  1. Define RE-AIM components
  2. Create measures across RE-AIM dimensions
  3. Calculate individual and setting level impacts of their interventions
  4. Apply RE-AIM methods across study designs for program,  policy, and environmental approaches.

  Fee: $75 USD

2.  Computer Tailoring
8:30 -11:30 am

Developing computer-tailored behavior change interventions

Workshop leaders:

Marci Campbell, Department of Nutrition, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, USA and Nicole Ezendam, Department of Public Health, Erasmus University Medical Center, Rotterdam, Netherlands

Computer-tailored health education is a very promising technique in the promotion of healthful behaviors. The technique of computer tailoring allows for the provision of behavior change information that is adapted to fit the unique characteristics, circumstances, beliefs, motivation to change and behavioral patterns of an individual. Application of the technique in the behavior change domain has evolved from primarily print-delivered interventions to programs delivered through interactive channels such as the Internet. The technique of developing computer-tailored interventions is, however, the same, irrespective of the mode of delivery chosen.

This workshop will focus on the process of developing computer-tailored interventions. The basis of a computer-tailored intervention is the theoretical framework. Derived from this framework a screening instrument has to be developed, a feedback library has to be composed, tailoring algorithms have to be written that link-up the responses to the screening instrument with the appropriate message from the feedback library and all the feedback messages together need to result in a consistent and appealing feedback section in a deliverable format.

Fee: $75 USD

3.  Policy Workshop
8:30 -11:30 am

Current Policy Solutions to the Obesity Crisis

Workshop Presenters:

Marilyn S. Nanney PhD, MPH, RD
Assistant Professor
Program in Health Disparities Research
Dept. of Family Medicine & Community Health
University of Minnesota

Jean Forster PhD
Professor
Dept. of Epidemiology and Community Health
School of Public Health University of Minnesota

Policies can change any context to make healthy food and physical activity easy, affordable, enjoyable, and the norm. Today’s policy landscape provides a remarkable learning laboratory of initiatives intending to shape industry and individual behaviors. This 3-hour workshop format will encourage discussions, critical examinations and provide current resources around the adoption, implementation and evaluation of policy solutions to the obesity crisis.

At the conclusion, workshop participants will be able to:

  • Site the advantages to and types of policy approaches for public health problems
  •  Describe the current obesity prevention policy landscape across various settings
  • Identify the changes achieved through policy solutions

Limit: 25 participants

Cost: $75
